The pioneer of press fittings, Viega’s ProPress fittings have provided a strong alternative to traditional connections since their introduction in 1989 and now see over a million installations a day. Available in hundreds of configurations and sizes ranging from ½” to 4” ProPress fittings are suitable for potable water, hot and cold water, heating, gas, solar, fire protection, and many more systems. Virtually any commercial, industrial, and residential applications have a use for ProPress fittings. The versatility of these fittings is just one of the advantages that differentiates them from the traditional methods of connecting pipe.
Speed and Simplicity
Creating a ProPress connection is simple and quick. Taking less than 30 seconds of preparation and between 4 to 7 seconds of pressing, these fittings have saved countless hours of work worldwide. Just deburr the pipe (to protect the fitting’s internal o-ring), slide the fitting on, mark the pipe to ensure you keep it in place, and press. Unlike soldering, ProPress fittings do not need a completely cleaned pipe to work. The force of the press creates a strong seal regardless.
No Fire
Unlike soldering, ProPress systems do not need an open flame to be completed. This creates a safer work environment and by not requiring a hot work permit, saves time.
Wet System Safe
Another advantage over soldering, ProPress fittings can be installed without having to drain and dry the system beforehand. This not only saves the trouble of draining every single drop of water out of the pipes, but minimizes the system’s downtime. Residents will get their water back much faster when the system doesn’t need a clearing period before the work even starts.
Accessibility
The ProPress system uses just one power tool that provides greater maneuverability than soldering. No bucket of additional tools and accessories, no working an open flame in tight spaces, and even no need for cleaning products. Just one power tool, a deburring tool, and fittings to make a connection on virtually any pipe, no matter its location.
Uniformity
By automatizing almost every step in the process, ProPress fittings consistently create uniform, clean, and reliable joints. Even the best trained plumber will make mistakes; the ProPress system removes that possibility and provides connections you can count on day in and day out.
Smart Connect
Only Viega ProPress fittings come with Smart Connect to ensure the fitting is properly sealed every time. A small green, yellow, or white dot located on the ring of each connection port is pressed away during a complete sealing process. If there is an attempt at pressing the fitting in place but the dot is still present the connection has not been made and should be redone. While the ProPress system is one of the most consistently reliable fittings on the market, the Smart Connect feature provides additional peace of mind.

Warranty for how many years, at what maximum temperatures and maximum presure ?
Hey Ion, Viega ProPress Fittings carry a 50-year warranty against defects in material and workmanship. As for their maximum pressure and temperature ratings, the general rule is that water applications can go up to 600psi and 250°F while air applications can go up to 200psi and 180°F. I would recommend checking it out before starting your installation.
A question I have is that can you solder a press fitting or us that not a good idea
Hi Todd,
That is not a good idea. Sweat fittings are designed to work with solder while press fittings are not. You might be able to get it to work, but it’s going to take longer, cost more, void warranties, and generally not be reliable. In a situation where your tool gives out during a job I would recommend switching to a sweat fitting to finish it up.
I use both systems the old traditional soldering and propress. I do enjoy the speed in which I can install a complete water system pat
I really like press fittings due to them having no fire risk. As you said, soldering uses an open flame which can pose a risk. That and if I had to get them done for my pipes, I would for sure go with a professional as they would know what methods to use best.
Had a plumbing repair last night at the high rise retirement community where I work. 3” line feeding a mixing valve was leaking at a solder joint. Forced a shut down of hot water to lower floors. Estimated for reporting purposes that shut down would be 4-6 hrs for repair. Shut down hot water at 8pm. Hot water was back on by 9:25. Plumber used all ProPress fittings including ball valve and check valve.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Dennis! It’s great to hear that you saw the positive impacts of ProPress fittings and valves firsthand!
