Recently our Israel team volunteered with Save a Child’s Heart (SACH), an organization that provides life-saving cardiac surgery to children with congenial heart defects from underdeveloped countries that lack the medical resources to treat the children’s conditions. Since its founding in 1995, SACH helped save the lives of over 4,400 children.
While the organization boasts its ability to transcend political divides in order to save lives, it is also aware of the systemic inequalities that lead to these children’s inability to be treated in their home countries. SACH’s ultimate dream is for each child to be able to receive the necessary care in his or her country –undoubtedly a more familiar and comfortable environment. To achieve this end, the organization sponsors physicians from underdeveloped countries to come and train under SACH’s medical team in Israel. SACH’s representatives also travel abroad to organize cardiac clinics and, when possible, operate on the children in their countries, often alongside local doctors who were trained in Israel.
Many of the children who end up coming to Israel stay at the children’s home, where they spend approximately three months preparing for and recovering from surgery. It is this house that we had the pleasure of visiting last week.
Our team spent time with the children living in the house making creative popsicle stick fish and paper crowns together. Everyone had a blast, and helped brighten the days of these amazing children. At the end of the day the children felt a little bit more like the kings and queens that they really are.
