How to Program Honeywell T4 Pro Thermostats

Nick B

The Honeywell T4 Pro Programmable Thermostat has several programmable and non-programmable options that can be fine tuned to your schedule.  But how do you get it to do what you need?  Read the instructions below or watch the video at the end of this post to learn how.  Or do both if you really want to be sure.

Base Settings

1) Power up the Unit
Once on, press the Select button to awaken the screen.

2) Setting the Year
Press the Plus or Minus buttons to choose the year you want and press the Select button to finalize.  (I suggest choosing the current year)

3) Setting the Month
Once the year is selected it will automatically ask you for the month.  Again, use the Plus and Minus buttons to navigate the months and hit Select to finalize.

4) Setting the Day
Just like with the month, you will be automatically asked to select the day, use the Plus and Minus buttons to navigate, and hit Select when the right one is on the screen.

5) Choosing Clock Format
Next, you will be asked to choose between a 12 and 24 hour clock.  Use the Plus, Minus, and Select buttons to make your decision.

6) Setting the Time
As you have been doing, use the Plus, Minus, and Select buttons to choose the time, but here you can press and hold either Plus or Minus to cycle through the numbers faster.  (While it might seem like a fun prank to set the time wrong and confuse people, it is important to set the time correctly for the rest of the programming to work properly.)

After selecting your time your base settings will be saved!

System Mode Settings

1) Get to the Home Screen
This is an easy one, press the Home button and you’re there.  This will be your hub to navigate the rest of your options.

2) Select your System Mode
Press the Mode button to cycle through the Heat, Cool, and Off modes until the one you want is displayed.

3) Advanced Menu
To access the Advanced Menu press the Menu button from the Home screen.  From here you will be able to adjust the thermostat settings like Program Schedule and the Base Settings.  Navigate them with the Plus and Minus buttons.

4) Turning Programming On or Off
Through the Advance Menu cycle through until “PROG” is displayed on the screen then press Select.  From here you will be presented with On or Off options which you can navigate and choose via the Plus, Minus, and Select buttons.

5) Program Schedules
From the end of step 4 select On.  Once there you will be able to navigate and select the desired program schedule with the Plus, Minus, and Select buttons.  For each schedule you will be able to program up to four time periods each day, with different settings for weekdays and weekends.  The times periods are;

  • Wake: When you wake up.
  • Away: When you leave the house for the day.
  • Home: When you return home for the evening.
  • Sleep: When you go to bed at night.

6) Setting and Editing Program Schedules
After selecting the time period to edit the system will have you set the Heating Schedule.  Using the Plus, Minus, and Select buttons choose the exact Time you want.  After that you will be prompted to select the Temperature you want.  After that you will move onto the Cooling schedule for that time period.  Follow the same steps as for Heating to complete this Schedule.

7) Turning Off Certain Time Periods
If you do not want to have one or more of the Time Periods (Wake, Away, Home, Sleep) active navigate the menu and select the one you do not want.  From here use the Plus or Minus buttons to switch from On to Off and then press Select.

8) Finalize Changes
Once everything is set just how you want, press the Home button and return to the home screen.  There will be a screen that reads “Save” before the home screen appears.  Don’t worry, you can always return to your settings and make any adjustments you want.

9) Overriding the Programmed Schedule
If you need to make a temporary or permanent change to the currently set temperature, press the Plus button on the Home screen.  Then the small temperature will begin flashing.  Adjust this to the temperature you want it to be and press the the Hold button to temporarily or permanently change the temperature.

10) Fan Options
There are two options here.  Fan Auto which only runs when the system is on and Fan On which runs continuously.  Press the Fan button on the Home screen to choose between the two.

Now you are all programmed!  When you need a T4 Pro or any other HVAC, heating, or plumbing products SupplyHouse.com will have what you need.  Stop by today and see our entire selection.

  1. Toan Duong says:

I have a T4 pro I can’t change the program only unlock showing in center of button why?

  2. Elly Michailidis says:

Why does my Honeywell not turn on for wake when I have turned it off to go to bed the night before. Does it need to be on all the time to follow the schedule? Also the sleep function, does that turn the heater off through the night?

    • Nick B says:

      Hi Elly,

So once you have programmed your thermostat you can just leave it and it will maintain the heat/cool levels you set it to. Go through the programming process, setting the times you want your home be certain temperatures, and then the thermostat will do the rest for you. The wake and sleep settings will be handled through that process, setting the temperature for the morning and night respectively.

  3. Kong Moua says:

My hold button disappeared. How do I get it back?

  4. Trish Ann says:

Good day, I had a T4 Pro installed. The technician advised me not to put batteries in the thermostat, as it would cause corrosion. Can you please confirm or advise if this is true. And if I choose not to utilize batteries, does this create any issues for the function of the thermostat, other than as a backup in the event of a power failure.

    • Nick B says:

      Hi Trish,
      .
While there is a small risk of corrosion with any battery, that should not stop you from using one. The thermostat has a low battery warning that will alert you that the battery needs changing.
      .
In regards to the backup question, the battery is the backup in case of power failure. So if your power goes out and you do not have a battery you will lose all of your programming and functionality until power returns and you reprogram it.

  5. Peter Adamkovics says:

my T4 is programmed to cool to a temperature of 72 for the “home” time period, but the thermostat goes to 68 on its own. i check the program, it’s correct, its set at the 72, i check the time and date, its correct, I save everything, go back to the home screen, thermostat says its going to cool to 68 still. why????

    • Nick B says:

      Hey Peter,
      .
Your best bet to getting this specific issue solved quickly and accurately is to reach out Honeywell directly following this link: https://www.honeywell.com/contact-us
      .
Another option would be to bring in a service tech to take a look at it, but that would cost money so I suggest reaching out to Honeywell first.

  6. Christina Smith says:

My fan does not ever turn off. I have Program set to “off” as well as the heat/cool system set to “off” but the fan is continuously running. How do I fix this issue?

    • Nick B says:

      Hi Christina,
      .
Have you looked into specifically your fan settings? It can be set either “on” or “auto” so if it is “on” then that explains it. If it is on “auto” then there are other issues.
      .
If this doesn’t solve your issue I suggest reaching out to Honeywell directly by following this link: https://www.honeywell.com/contact-us

      • Christina Smith says:

Thanks for the quick reply, Nick. The fan is set to “auto” but still runs when system is off.

        • Nick B says:

Yeah, I’m not sure at this point. I would recommend reaching out to Honeywell directly with the link in my comment above. They have a phone number to call or a form to fill out depending on what you want to do.

  7. scott says:

hi i have a t4pro and program doesnt show up in the advanced menu

  8. David Smythe says:

I was able to set the date, time, function. But when I press menu, I do not see PROG, thus I can’t set a program. Any tips?

  9. Amanda says:

Hi There is a warning triangle on top of Fan Auto. What does it mean?

    Thanks
    Amanda

    • Nick B says:

      Hi Amanda,
      .
I am not sure what that warning is referencing to in your situation. For specific help I would suggest reaching out to Honeywell directly, they’ll be able to help you better. I attached a link that will get you where you need to go.

  10. r n says:

Hi, I moved to a new home and am trying to reset the schedule. I can’t figure out how to reset whether it is on heat or cool. So for example, it’s summer time, and if I set one of the time periods to 77 degrees, it still shows heat. Other time periods show cool when set at the same temperature. Thanks in advance!

    • Nick B says:

      Hey,
      .
So there are a couple of things you can try.
      1) Change the Mode: From the home screen press the Mode button and cycle through Heat, Cool, and Off modes until you have the one that makes sense for you.
      2) Change the Program settings: From the home screen press the Menu button and navigate until “PROG” is displayed. Select that and change the programming settings until it’s all set how you want.
      .
Check out our video I am linking for a visual on how to do that -> https://youtu.be/ZkGfslseYWA?t=1m10s
      .
If none of that helps I would suggest reaching out to Honeywell directly for specific guidance. You can get to them with the link here -> https://www.honeywell.com/contact-us

  11. Jessica says:

Can I put a lock it so nobody can turn the system off

  12. Brady says:

How do I programe the thermostat to say 70 degrees when the room temp is really 68 degrees?

  13. Robert Chance says:

My oil company recently installed a T4 Pro thermostat. It is my understanding that this unit is a 5-2 or 5 1-1. When I attemp to program it, it forces me to program all 7 day individually, instead of programing Monday thru Friday as a block. Is this a defective unit, or am I doing something incorrectly. I have read the owner manual multiple times, plus watch multiple YouTube vids, but can’t figure what I’m doing wrong.

    • Nick B says:

      Hi Robert,
      .
You should be seeing Monday through Friday in a block for programming. From the Home screen go to Menu, then select PROG, and then ON. From there at the top of the screen you should see “Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri” flashing to be edited.
      .
I am not sure why it is forcing you to program each day individually. For help on this specific issue I recommend reaching out to Honeywell directly. Use the link below to do so.
      https://www.honeywell.com/contact-us

      • Robert Chance says:

Nick, thanks for the reply. I followed the steps you described, the only thing that is flashing is Monday, I will get in touch with Honeywell, hopefully they can walk me thru this issue.

        • Nick B says:

No problem, they’ll be able to get to the bottom of this.

          • Robert Chance says:

Saw a tech from oil company today. Apparently the tech who installed my thermostat was new, unfamiliar with this unit and did something incorrectly when setting it up. The techie today used what he decried as a BACK DOOR FIX to correct my issue. Everything is fine now.

          • Nick B says:

Great! I’m glad you got it working.

  14. Klayton says:

Thermostat will not let me go below 70 in cool mode. How can i override this? I’ve seen other videos about other models featuring a range stop function, but I am unable to figure this out for the T4 pro.

  15. Nick says:

    Hello,
My unit will not display a model button or a fan button. The only options that ever displays is “unlock” , once you press unlock, it takes you to a screen where you can plus or minus up to four numbers, on this screen the only “button” option it displays is “back”. The tech did not provide any instructions on the process of generating the “mode” or “fan” button to display. I am unable to enter into advanced mode or change any other settings. The temperature remains at a constant 71.

    • Raquel says:

Hello! Thank you for your question. You may be able to resolve this by unlocking your thermostat. Here are instructions on how to do so.

  16. Eddie says:

What would cause the thermostat not to give me heat as an option? While cycling through the settings I only have cool/off as options.

  17. Linda Beese says:

I have the fan set to on but it won’t come on… any ideas?

    • Raquel says:

      Hello Linda.

It may possible that there is something wrong with the fan itself. Is this something you already looked into?

  18. Ryan says:

How do I change the lock code? I didn’t find the instructions in the install resources linked at https://forwardthinking.honeywellhome.com/assets/tseries/resources/install/T4%20Pro%20User%20Guide%20-%2033-00188EFS.pdf

    Thanks
    Ryan

  19. Joyce says:

    Hi,

Is there any way to have the fan completely off the entire time? Do I have to put it at a certain temp for it not to turn on..? Moved to new house but they forgot to leave manual & no verbal instructions on how to use it.

    Thanks in advance,
    Joyce

    Joyce

    • SupplyHouse says:

There are two fan modes for this thermostat. In “On” mode, the fan operates continuously. In “Auto,” the fan only runs when the heating or cooling system is running. The fan will only cease running if the heating or cooling systems are not running.

  20. LENWARD says:

I have a Honeywell t4 and when the temp.in my house is at 64 AND I WHAT IT TO BE WARMER WHY IS IT THAT WHEN I SET IT AT A SET TEMP. ITGOES PASS THAT AND GET`S SO HOT THAT I HAVE TO TURN ON THE AC TO COOL.

    • SupplyHouse says:

We’d advise that you take a look at your program settings. It’s possible that the thermostat has programmed schedules causing the setpoint to go beyond your desired temperatures. It’s also possible that the thermostat is positioned in an area of the house much cooler than the spaces you generally occupy, which could cause it to run for a length of time that causes other areas of the house to get uncomfortably warm

  21. Jason says:

    Good afternoon.
I have two T4 thermostats in my home and neither have an auto selection for the temperature. I have heat, cool, e-heat and off.
So my question is do I need to have the auto option when the thermostat is following a schedule? If so how do I get the “auto” option?

  22. Nick Kuester says:

Is there a way where I can turn off the programming, and just use this as a regular thermostat? When this was installed we were able to keep it going without a schedule, but a couple nights this week its defaulted to the default schedule.

    • Gregory says:

      Hi Nick,
Yes, you can turn off the programming feature. To do this, please use the Advanced Menu setting. To access this, press the Menu button from the Home screen. From here you will be able to adjust the thermostat settings like Program schedule and Base Settings. Navigate these with the Plus and Minus Buttons. To turn the Programming On or Off, go through the Advanced Menu cycle until “PROG” is displayed on the screen then press Select. From here you will be presented with On or Off options which you can navigate and choose via the Plus, Minus, and Select buttons.
      Thank you!
      Greg

  23. Vic says:

Hello I just had a T4 Pro installed with the cool and heat programmed I just only see a auto for the fan does the system changes automatically I have it on cool now but would like for it to turn to heat if the temperature drops when I’m not home

  24. Stan Neese says:

I had my brand new thermostat moved from one side of the house to the other & since the moved I keep having a Battery Low reading on the screen. If I unplug it & put it back in it goes off for 45 minutes then comes back on. Our Tech has no idea – brand new & brand new batteries tested fully charged. How can I turn the Low Batter wording off my screen?

    • Gregory says:

      Hi Stan,

It would seem to us that your thermostat is defective. We’d advise trying to replace it under the warranty, which we can assist with if you purchased it from SupplyHouse.com

  25. michael says:

i use it for commercial.if i want to set up: “away”—for the night time. “home”—for the daytime.is it the same setting?

    • Gregory says:

      Hi Michael,
The thermostat cannot internally have the “Home” and “Away” wording reversed unfortunately. However, setting the “Home” at a lower/higher temperature set point than the “Away” will not cause an functionality issues.

  26. Mario R says:

I’m trying to increase the temperature in heat mode and does not go beyond 70 degrees.

  27. Tim K says:

    Hello,
Just curious is anyone has reported an issue where the schedule cycles on exactly one-hour before the programmed time. Example–my unit is programmed to increase the heat setting from 62 to 66 at 5:00PM. Clock is set to the correct time. Unit comes on at 4:00PM. I have reset the clock a couple of times. I have reset my schedule a couple of times. Have not seen any “daylight saving time” setting. It’s odd. Not something that cannot be worked around.

    Thanks.
    Tim

  28. Tomika Johnson says:

My thermostat is on 74 and it says its 66 degrees in the house. Its heat and fan auto..why is it freezing in my house?

    • Gregory says:

If your system is not able to maintain the setpoint temperatures it has been in the past (and assuming there is not extreme cold weather beyond the capacity of the system), it usually means one of three things: 1) The thermostat is not functioning or reading ambient temperatures properly 2) Something went wrong with the communication between the thermostat and heating equipment 3) The thermostat is functioning properly and is linked to the heating equipment, but the heating equipment is malfunctioning. In many cases you will need an HVAC technician to diagnose the problem.

  29. Lang says:

I have the T4 unit and in the setting up the program I’d like to know how to only have a’ heat’ temp setting without having a ‘cool’ temp setting to be required in the program. How do I set this up?

    • Gregory says:

As far as we can tell, there is no way to avoid having to set cooling temperatures while setting up the program schedule on this thermostat. That said, cooling mode should never be enabled if you keep the thermostat in heating mode and keep the automatic changeover function disabled.

  30. Lindsey says:

So a few years ago, our a/c crapped out. Our landlord had a new one put in for us. The Honeywell t4 pro series. The installer must have put lock of sorts the advanced menu I keep seeing about, because when I press and hold the center button for 3 seconds, all the comes up is the regular menu. We live in a split level duplex. The upstairs gets unbareingly hot in the summer; and my husband cannot get the thermostat below 70. I’ve called the landlord and she said we can go below 70 if we needed to, we’re paying the electric. So how can we bypass what the installer did, and be comfortable this summer?

    • Gregory says:

Hi Lindsey, we advise you to call Honeywell at 800-468-1502 to troubleshoot, since their technicians will be able to diagnose your issue. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to our customer support team at (888) 757-4774.

  31. Tim says:

How come my t4 pro thermostat is running both heat pump and ac at the same time? Is it a defective thermostat?

    • Gregory says:

Hi Tim, we advise you to call Honeywell at 800-468-1502 to troubleshoot, since their technicians will be able to diagnose your issue. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to our customer support team at (888) 757-4774.

  32. Kath says:

We just had a new system installed with a t4 thermostat. The installer said to read the manual, but I can’t seem to find how to me set it for the same temperature all day, everyday. Can you break down the steps for me?

    • Gregory says:

Hi Kath. We suggest reaching out to Honeywell and speaking to one of their technicians to program your thermostat if you are having issues. Their number is 800-468-1502.

  33. Barbara Capps says:

What’s the difference in 12 hrs and 24 hrs programming? Which should my thermostat be set on ?

    • Gregory says:

Hi Barbara! If you are referring to the 12 hr and 24 hr clock, then that means the format you would like your time displayed in. For example, on a 12 hour clock, one in the afternoon is 1:00 pm, whereas on a 24 hour clock it is 13:00. Does that make sense? Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!

  34. Dan says:

Is there a way to program all seven days at the same time? I am retired and have the same schedule each day. Thanks … Dan

  35. Ernest Cerce says:

I had a T4 Pro installed last week. Model TH411OU2005.
On my prior thermostat I would set it at 72 (cool or heat) and it would come on at 73 and shut off at 71.
The T4 is set at 72 and stays at 72. The display never goes up to turn on or down to shut off but does turn on and turn off. What I am finding is the AC sometimes comes on for 5 minutes and shuts off in 5 minutes. How come this happens? Will it cause damage to the AC unit with this frequent on/off?
I would appreciate any help you can give to me to understand this.
    Thank you.

    • Gregory says:

We would recommend that you first reach out to Honeywell Customer Care directly (1-800-468-1502) to see if they are familiar with this issue and if they can give you some advice. If they cannot assist, we would recommend that you reach back out to whoever installed your thermostat, or speak with your HVAC technician for the best solution.

  36. Jsjdjdhd says:

Our new house has the t4 we had turned off the ac but dont know how we did it I set the temp and selected every option for the ac 6 hours later it still has not turned on and we are all hot

  37. Lynne says:

If I put this thermostat in a rental unit, can I check the history of the temperature use or temps in the unit over a period of time?

    • Gregory says:

Hi Lynne. This thermostat actually does not record the past temperature settings. I’m not aware of any thermostat that would be able to show you the history of past temperature settings on it. However, it does have the ability to set a maximum and minimum set point so the user in the rental unit wouldn’t be able to turn the heat or A/C up or down past a pre-determined point, but there is no archiving of the actual temperatures.

  38. programming my T4 Pro
when I hit the menu button PROG does not show up? I have checked to see if I was locked out a few times but that is not the case? help.

    • Gregory says:

Edward, we would recommend that you reach out to Honeywell Customer Care directly (1-800-468-1502) to see if they are familiar with this issue and if they can give you some advice. Hope this helps!

  39. Chris says:

I recently had a T4 installed with a new heating and cooling system. The Thermostat is showing the words Permantent Hold on the left side of the screen. What does this mean? Not sure how I got that on there.

    • Gregory says:

Hi Chris, we suggest reaching out to Honeywell Customer Care directly (1-800-468-1502) to see if they are familiar with this issue and if they can give you some advice. Hope this helps get your issue solved!

  40. Mario says:

I programmed to turn on the a/c unit at 8:00 am at 70 and i want it to turn off at 1:00 pm. I dont know how to program the a/c unit to automatically turn off at the desired time.

    • Gregory says:

Hi Mario. The best solution for this would be to contact Honeywell Customer Care directly (1-800-468-1502) and speak with them about the programming issue. Hope this helps!

  41. Darryl Clark says:

Hi there, I have the t4 pro and I my ac was working fine but now I’ve been trying to set it to cool and it says cool on but nothing is coming out and now it’s 89 degrees in my house. Can you help please?

    • Gregory says:

Daryl, the best solution for this would be to contact Honeywell Customer Care directly (1-800-468-1502) and ask them for help troubleshooting the cooling issue. Hope this helps!

  42. Gaile Cousens says:

My screen is blank…no temp nothing….does it need new batteries? This is the main unit…every other room thermostat works

    • Gregory says:

Gaile, we recommend reaching out to Honeywell Customer Care directly at (1-800-468-1502) to ask them for help troubleshooting your blank screen. Hope this helps!

  43. M Nich says:

For people who don’t see the PROG in the Menu, it likely means programming has been turned off in the Installer Setup Menu. It’s not about being Locked out as suggested by Nick in several replies. See the Installer Manual.

  44. JAG1 says:

I have a new heat pump and T4 Pro thermostat installed last month. Is there a point at which the back up heat (electric strips) will kick in. For example if the temp is normally set to hold at 70, but i manually bump the the setting to 77. will the electric heat strips kick in to bring the temp up faster?

Th reason for the question is if i set a program to let the temp in the house drop drop to 60 during the night and bring the temp back up to 70 at 8 AM, will that kick in the electric strips? That doesn’t sound very economical.

  45. JAG1 says:

Another Question. I have a new heat pump and T4 Pro thermostat installed last month. The heat pump seems to be cycling on and off frequently. The inside temp is set at 71. Outside temp is 33. The display on the T4 always shows the inside temp at 71 – before, during and after the heat pump runs.It runs for abut 60 to 90 seconds, shuts off for a few minutes then runs again. It seems to me that it runs too frequently… IS IT?
My guess is that the actual temp inside is 71.0 or 71.1 when the heat comes on and that it is 71.9 when it shuts off. Can this be reset to allow a slightly larger spread between the time hen it kicks on and when it kicks off?

  46. Our contractor installed Pro to our hot water / boiler heating system. Obviously we have no fan. What shold the fan setting be in my case? Thank you

  47. B says:

“Recovery” appeared on the screen and I could not override it (Proseries 4110) Now it’s not showing any more (?) Any suggestions as to how to override if it shows up again and why it disappeared?
    Thank you

  48. Jud Pardue says:

I have a new T4 installed the old unit had a differential of 2 to 2.5 degrees this unit has less than one degree, is there any way to increase the spread, so the unit does not constantly come on and off?

  49. Yvonne Gilmore says:

T4 fan runs with unit is off; Fan is not on auto or on; I’ve turn thermostat off; but the fan still runs. How do I correct

  50. Daniel Quezada says:

i have a chiller/ boiler 4 pipe system with zone valves is the T4 pro a thermostat i can use?
