Water heater maintenance

The weather these days is unpredictable. This week it may be 50 degrees, but next week could call for three layers of clothing, gloves and radiant heating. That is why it’s imperative to be prepared. Check your boiler and heating system now, before the cold weather is here to stay!

Maintenance should be left for the professionals, but there are small steps you can take to assure that you are good-to-go when the colder weather strikes.

  •  Examine your boiler’s vent connection pipe and check for possible deterioration such as rust.  Determine that no holes or cracks are present.
  • Check the inside of the pipe for dirt or rust, and clean as necessary.
  • Oil the circulator pump and motor if it has oiler ports. Most of the newer pumps do not require oil.
  • Make sure your heat exchanger is not leaking water, and check the boiler’s water level.
  • Check and adjust the controls on your boiler to help improve efficiency levels.

“Honestly now is the time to get the pro to check everything out, before it gets cold,” suggests Daniel O’Brian, an in-house technical expert here at SupplyHouse.com.
