There was once a time when air conditioning options went two ways – an over-complicated elaborate system of ducts or an over-simplified window unit. Option 1 was costly and time consuming, while option 2 was seen as only a short-term solution. Then ductless mini-splits came along. And they sort of saved the world.
Mini-splits are the happy medium we’ve been waiting for.
They are small in size, and versatile for use in many different rooms. One outdoor condenser can power multiple rooms between 100 and 2500 sq. feet. The installation is simple and the upkeep is virtually none. To install a ductless mini-split system, a professional simply needs to drill a 3-inch hole in the wall to run conduit for hooking up the outdoor unit to indoor units. The evaporator units (inside the house) and condenser (outside) work together to transfer and dissipate heat via the refrigerant pumped between the two units. When used in heating mode, we simply reverse the process and pump heat from outside to the inside. It’s all a matter of capturing and moving heat, like central air conditioning, but without the cleaning, maintenance and price tag involved with ductwork.
The benefits extend far beyond the cash that still remains in your pocket after the ease of install. You will continue to save and save some more, because mini-splits are much more energy efficient. They work like cruise control in your vehicle, and use only the minimum energy required to perfectly match your heating and cooling needs. As the systems get closer to the set point temperature, the mini-split will vary the amount of freon being pumped and electrical consumption will decline. Other air conditioners turn on and off in a process known as “cycling,” which is a big waste of electricity. Mini-splits remain running, adjusting the amount of freon being pumped thru the system, which is more energy conscious than if the system switched on and off.
If you’re conscious of the interior decoration in your home, Mini-splits also offer much more interior design flexibility (therefore saving your home from an ugly radiator, and in turn saving the world.) The indoor unit can be hung on the wall, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, suspended from the ceiling and the Art Cool unit can even house a picture and be disguised as artwork hanging over your couch!
So, are you convinced yet?
