Several recent blogs revolved around SharkBite and its ability to provide an alternative to soldering. While the product I’m about to discuss is not tool-free, it allows those without much copper installation experience to make a solid connection. Parker Hannifin came out with a new method for connecting copper fittings with refrigerant piping called ZoomLock.

 

Installation is similar to Viega’s ProPress in which the tool’s jaw crimps down the fitting, squeezing it into a secure hold. An important difference to note when installing is that the tool must press down between the o-ring and the flange (also known as the end of the fitting). Of course, prep the copper piping with a deburring tool to prevent the internal o-rings in the ZoomLock fittings from any potential damage.

Some important facts include, but are not limited to the following: The internal o-rings in these fittings can withstand a maximum temperature range of -40°F to 300°F; however, a normal continuous operating temperature is listed around 250°F. For HVAC/R systems, these products can handle up to 700 PSI. You need one tool with the proper sized jaw—ranging from 1/4” to 1-3/8” depending on your needs—that reportedly cuts down on time spent at a job. Parker Hannifin lists in their brochure that they have two larger sizes coming soon, so keep an eye out!

When selecting fittings, be aware that the ZoomLock fittings works exclusively with either the Parker Hannifin Klauke tool or RIGID version! We carry the Klauke crimping tool, which has a short pressing cycle of 5 to 7 seconds. Its jaws’ designs are manufactured with tight spaces in mind; they have a 350° rotation to help the technician squeeze into these areas. For your safety, the crimp cycle allows for interruption. To elaborate, a manual release of the piston can be used if needed.

 

Tubing compatibility depends on which tool you’re using. For example, with the Klauke 15 kN jaws, you can use for sizes 1/4” to 1-1/8” hard copper (types ACR, M, and L) and the same sizes for soft copper (types ACR or L).
