Iain Bevan’s a plumber and former member of the Royal Navy who when faced with the loss of several friends, his father-in-law, and mother to cancer decided to raise money to find a cure for the disease which took so much from him.
What He Did
Combining his current and past careers as a plumber and sailor along with his desire to be a bit ridiculous and to create a spectacle the only logical thing for Bevan was to build a boat out of bathtub and paddle across a nearby bay. The 51 year old, resident of southwest England put his homemade boat in Torbay earlier this week, and paddled for 2 and a half hours to get across! That’s a long trip even in a kayak that is specifically built to go through water, so a bathtub-turned-boat is not going to be any easier.
Bevan’s publicity stunt sparked a discussion on him and his situation, leading people to his JustGiving page aimed to make £10,000. At the time of writing he’s reached just under 20% of his goal, with this stunt giving him the spark to get it all started. If you want to check up on his progress or donate yourself, check out his fundraising page on JustGiving.com called Iain’s Cancer Research Bath Tub Challenge 14.7.18. I hope this one takes off like the ice bucket challenge, I want to see an armada of bathtub boats!
